Our love for light-filled, airy interiors is well-documented, but every once in a while, we encounter moody, sexy spaces that tempt us to the dark side—like this culinary lair from deVOL designed for a couple who live in Petersham, a small village on the Thames, not far from London. The owners wanted a space that was inviting, calm, and original. And—here’s the tough part—they didn’t want to spend a fortune.

In the end, they were able to get everything they asked for, at a price that wasn’t over the top. The entire project—including the counters, appliances, and accessories—came in under £25,000 (that’s $32,497 at time of publication), an admirable feat given the sophisticated results.

Let’s take a tour of this dark star, which, incidentally, was just awarded Kitchen of the Year by the UK’s Designer Kitchens & Baths Magazine.

Above: Most of the kitchen is newly built, but the wood fireplace mantel over the cast iron Esse stove is original to the home. The patinated copper backsplash and copper worktop on the island are warm, glowing counterpoints to the matte dark paint on the cabinets.
