Here are tips and resources (and the easiest DIY) that I used to decorate the staircase at Christmas in the center of our historic home.

Someone stopped by our house to say hello and asked me if I had a favorite room.
I didn’t even have to think.
Don’t tell the other rooms, but this is my number one.
My go-to.
My ride or die.
It’s at the very center of our house and you can stand in the middle of it and see the front door at one end and the back door at the other end. I think someone told me the house was designed like that for airflow way before air conditioning was invented. There’s a wrap-around staircase with beautiful moldings and the prettiest banister. I used to wait for Santa on the very first step and we take family pictures on the staircase every year.
It’s a beautiful room that looks beautiful all year round.
But at Christmas?
It’s a supermodel.
And this year I went a totally different direction with decorating it. I kind of had a vision that involved a project and I wasn’t sure how it was going to turn out (and if it was going to turn out).
And now?
WAIT UNTIL YOU SEE HOW IT TURNED OUT.
Here’s how I decorated it (and a super simple project you can use for your Christmas decorating, too).

How To Decorate a Staircase For Christmas
Here’s the entry decorated for 2024.
The theme this year?
Paper trees.
I got these large trees at Walmart (and they were SUCH a bargain). In sad news, they are all sold out online now, but you can check your local store—that’s where I found them. The smaller trees (and I linked those under the picture) are covering this small dresser which s a piece that we inherited from my husband’s grandmother.
It was damaged so I distressed it (you can see how I distress wood in minutes here).

The staircase is wrapped with garland.
The garland is a basic lambsear garland that I doubled up on.
I always get questions about this garland when I share. I just attach two garlands and kind of twist them together—twisting the leaves from one garland to the other garland.
You can see all my favorite faux greenery here.

I added the prettiest brown velvet ribbon for bows.
You can see a similar velvet ribbon here.

Here’s a photograph of the entire staircase so you can see how I draped the garland.
Make sure when you hang it you have someone else to help eyeball it so you make sure your garland swags are even and not too glumpy on one side.
(total aside: I’m not even sure if glumpy is a word, but the twins and I use it on the regular).

I still need to decorate the hutch, but here’s how I decorated it a couple of years ago that I’m using for my inspiration. I love this swag of greenery on my favorite yard sale hutch.
And these little Christmas tree ornaments that I bought downtown on our square are so cute.
On top of the hutch are stacks of wooden boxes.

Right at the entrance to the office, I have this set of three trees.
I made this scrabble tile garland and tied the tiles onto a ribbon.
Then I added the bottle brush trees under this mini glass cloche.
You can see a similar mini cloche here.

And see this Merry Christmas sign?
I made it from printer paper.
It’s such an easy project and here’s how I created it.

How To Make Paper Christmas Banners
1. I found this font over on PicMonkey. You can use it for free. This font is called “Dearest Outline.”
2. Print it out on printer paper.
3. Cut out the words, leaving about 4″ on either end.
4. Fold over the ends and then fold again as shown.
5. Notch the ends.
6. Attach to the tree with sticky dots.

I know you aren’t supposed to have room favorites.
You are supposed to love them all equally.
And try to. I really do.
Truly.
It’s just when I’m handing out the Christmas joy and decorations.
I save a little something special for this space.
Merry Christmas from my favorite room to yours.
