Here are tips and resources (and the easiest DIY) that I used to decorate the staircase at Christmas in the center of our historic home.

Small decorative trees, perfect for learning how to decorate a staircase, stand with various textures; one is under a glass cloche. Wooden letters hang on a string in the background, partially spelling "XMAS." The setting is rustic and festive.

Someone stopped by our house to say hello and asked me if I had a favorite room.

I didn’t even have to think.

Don’t tell the other rooms, but this is my number one.

My go-to.

My ride or die.

It’s at the very center of our house and you can stand in the middle of it and see the front door at one end and the back door at the other end. I think someone told me the house was designed like that for airflow way before air conditioning was invented. There’s a wrap-around staircase with beautiful moldings and the prettiest banister. I used to wait for Santa on the very first step and we take family pictures on the staircase every year.

It’s a beautiful room that looks beautiful all year round.

But at Christmas?

It’s a supermodel.

And this year I went a totally different direction with decorating it. I kind of had a vision that involved a project and I wasn’t sure how it was going to turn out (and if it was going to turn out).

And now?

WAIT UNTIL YOU SEE HOW IT TURNED OUT.

Here’s how I decorated it (and a super simple project you can use for your Christmas decorating, too).

Two hanging star-shaped decorations, one beige and one white, are positioned against a backdrop of greenery and dried leaves. The stars, perfect for learning how to decorate a staircase, appear to be made of folded material, adding a textured look to the festive scene.

How To Decorate a Staircase For Christmas

Here’s the entry decorated for 2024.

The theme this year?

Paper trees.

I got these large trees at Walmart (and they were SUCH a bargain). In sad news, they are all sold out online now, but you can check your local store—that’s where I found them. The smaller trees (and I linked those under the picture) are covering this small dresser which s a piece that we inherited from my husband’s grandmother.

It was damaged so I distressed it (you can see how I distress wood in minutes here).

Discover how to decorate a staircase for the season with cozy touches like garlands and paper trees in cream and brown hues. Wooden stairs glow under a chandelier, while mirrors on the wall reflect the decor. A white side table adds charm, holding even more festive trees.

The staircase is wrapped with garland.

The garland is a basic lambsear garland that I doubled up on.

I always get questions about this garland when I share. I just attach two garlands and kind of twist them together—twisting the leaves from one garland to the other garland.

I added the prettiest brown velvet ribbon for bows.

An elegant crystal chandelier hangs from the ceiling, adorned with decorative metalwork and teardrop-shaped crystals. As an inspiring touch in how to decorate a staircase, green garlands with star decorations drape from the railing above. Sunlight filters through windows in the background.

The staircase, a prime example of how to decorate a staircase, features green garlands on the railing. Various decorative mirrors and wreaths adorn the wall beside the stairs, reflecting light from nearby windows with patterned curtains. The atmosphere is bright and elegant.

Here’s a photograph of the entire staircase so you can see how I draped the garland.

Make sure when you hang it you have someone else to help eyeball it so you make sure your garland swags are even and not too glumpy on one side.

(total aside: I’m not even sure if glumpy is a word, but the twins and I use it on the regular).

I still need to decorate the hutch, but here’s how I decorated it a couple of years ago that I’m using for my inspiration. I love this swag of greenery on my favorite yard sale hutch.

And these little Christmas tree ornaments that I bought downtown on our square are so cute.

On top of the hutch are stacks of wooden boxes.

A wooden tabletop Christmas tree adorned with a "MERRY CHRISTMAS" banner of letter tiles complements two nearby miniature trees, perfectly capturing the festive spirit. For extra cheer, consider adding similar decorations to your staircase for a cohesive holiday scene.

A vintage-style room with a wooden cabinet topped with marble features decorative wooden trees, a reindeer figure, and small ornaments. Above, a rustic wall piece holds colorful spools of thread. Sunlight streams in from a nearby window, adding inspiration on how to decorate a staircase nearby.

Right at the entrance to the office, I have this set of three trees.

I made this scrabble tile garland and tied the tiles onto a ribbon.

Then I added the bottle brush trees under this mini glass cloche.

A paper Christmas tree sculpture with layered sheets elegantly decorates the staircase, accompanied by a banner reading "Merry Christmas" in ornate font. A star decoration and greenery complete this festive stairway display, offering inspiration on how to decorate a staircase beautifully.

And see this Merry Christmas sign?

I made it from printer paper.

It’s such an easy project and here’s how I created it.

A stack of white papers with "Merry Christmas" in Gothic font, gently overlapping on a flat surface, offers inspiration on how to decorate a staircase.

A diagonal arrangement of white, circular discs on a light gray surface creates a pattern with even spacing and soft shadows, offering inspiration for how to decorate a staircase with subtle elegance.

Paper Christmas trees in various sizes adorn the scene, with a white tree in the foreground showcasing a "Noel" sign. Silver ribbon decorations grace metallic gift boxes nearby. For an elegant touch, consider using these elements to learn how to decorate a staircase this festive season.

How To Make Paper Christmas Banners

1. I found this font over on PicMonkey. You can use it for free. This font is called “Dearest Outline.”

2. Print it out on printer paper.

3. Cut out the words, leaving about 4″ on either end.

4. Fold over the ends and then fold again as shown.

5. Notch the ends.

6. Attach to the tree with sticky dots.

I know you aren’t supposed to have room favorites.

You are supposed to love them all equally.

And try to. I really do.

Truly.

It’s just when I’m handing out the Christmas joy and decorations.

I save a little something special for this space.

Merry Christmas from my favorite room to yours.
