In the saddest of news, the twins left yesterday for college.
Around here summer is officially at an end.
It isn’t new, they’ve left before.
And I’ve been sad before.
But yesterday for some reason was different.
I think this summer was just so precious. There’s a moment in life when you realize that those littles that sat at your feet and listened to stories and ran barefoot in the green grass of Kentucky and twirled on the porch in their twirly whirly skirts…
…somewhere, somehow, someway became adults.
And then?
In the most amazing news of all?
You realize that you don’t just love them. You actually like them. If these two chicks of mine, weren’t my daughters? I would want to be best friends with them.
So to show them how special they are to me.
To have one last little mini celebration, the day before they left…
….I surprised them with this.

// Fall Apple Pumpkin Candle //
I went to the store and found our favorite fall candle.
This is the candle that I wait for all year.
It’s called Farm Apple Pumpkin. If you’ve gotten it before, you may be looking for the red jars. Last year it was red, but this year it’s orange.
This candle sells out so quickly because it’s SO AFFORDABLE and burns for such a long time and smells so much better than the zillion other expensive fall candles I’ve bought before. I got it at my local Walmart, but last year I ordered it online because my store was sold out.
Just a quick note: If you are local—don’t go to the Walmart on University because I bought every one they had.
You can order it online here.

Then I brought all those candles home and lit them in the kitchen and family room area.
And found a fun movie on television and turned down the air conditioner and piled up blankets on the couches.
Then I sat and waited for the twins to come home.
They burst through the door (they are so good at bursting onto the scene) and they couldn’t believe it.
It smelled like fall.

Outside it was summer.
But inside?
It was fall with extra Farm Apple Pumpkin sprinkled on top.
It was cozy and you could almost smell football in the air.
We giggled and laughed and watched the movie and snuggled under our blankets and I tried to pretend that they weren’t really leaving the next day and wished with all my heart that this evening could go on forever.

But like everything good.
It came to an end and this morning they packed up their car to the brim with pillows and hair dryers and refrigerator organizers and a vacuum that they loved so much they begged me to let them take it to school.
I hugged them one last time and stood at the doorway and watched the car back out of the driveway.
And my heart was so heavy.
But I think they knew how much I’d miss them.

Because when I walked back into the house, I found these.
Two notes—written and tucked away for me to find.
I kept these notes on my desk all day and when my heart was sad?
I’d reread them again.
And on my 2,274 time I read the notes, I decided right then and there that the only thing better than having daughters?
Is having daughters who are your very best friends.
PS I also consoled myself with the fact that I’m going to see them next weekend at the first football game.
I wanted to share some of my other favorite ways I make the house smell like fall.
Click on any of the pictures to shop.
Most of these products you have to order online because stores that stock Mrs. Meyers don’t usually stock the fall scents.
My favorite fall Mrs. Meyers scent is Mum and you can get it in dish soap, counter spray and hand soap and lotion.
I also linked even more fall-scented products for the house here on my Amazon store if you like to order off Amazon.
You can see them here.
Happy shopping!
