Two towels hang on a white paneled wall. Each towel features a pattern with green leaves and light blue flowers on a white background, bordered by stripes in green, blue, and white. The towels appear fluffy and neatly arranged, providing a cozy, decorative touch.

Just in case I hadn’t mentioned it before?

I love my mother.

Like extra love with sprinkles on top.

I wanted to surprise her with a mini bathroom refresh. Nothing fancy, just these amazing hydrangea towels that I found and a few other things. A quick bathroom refresh to make her smile. I needed a little help with some pictures and a shelf and so I asked my husband if he had a few minutes.

I told him it was an exciting opportunity…

…one that comes along once a summer.

I know what you’re thinking.

We lead a very, very exciting life.

And you would be right.

A pristine white bathroom features a vanity with dual sinks, a framed mirror with light fixtures, a toilet, and towels with blue patterns. The floor has white hexagonal tiles, and a wooden mat lies in front of the vanity. A window is covered with a sheer curtain.

Here’s a quick pic of the finished bathroom.

I just made a few small changes like adding this wood mat (that is absolutely amazing) and changing out the artwork and fixing the shelf and cleaning the space and adding new towels and new bathroom accessories.

But those quick changes took a little longer than I originally anticipated.

My husband has the patience of a saint and I don’t think he minds helping me with a project if I would just speed up the process.

But it takes time.

It requires thought and precision timing and placement and the occasional moving of something from one side of the room to the other….

….and back again.

Only to have it end up right where you began.

Girls hit your Hallelujah.

Three decorative ceramic containers sit on a countertop. One container with a dotted texture holds cotton swabs, while the other with a zigzag pattern contains cotton balls. A lid with a few cotton balls placed on it is seen in the foreground.

Close-up of a textured fabric featuring a floral pattern with light blue flowers and green leaves on a cream background. The design includes a vertical black and green stripe running through the center.

A folded gray towel drapes over the edge of a surface. The towel features a pattern of large white circular flowers with small leaves extending from the stems. The background and the edges of the towel are neat and clean, contrasting with the white flower motifs.

A well-lit bathroom featuring a white vanity with a beige countertop, a rectangular mirror with five decorative light bulbs above it, a hand towel with circular patterns, a patterned towel hanging on the wall, and a wooden mat on a white hexagonal-tiled floor.

Thirty minutes into the process, in the effort to generally speed everything up so he could go for a run before we went down to the beach….

….he started making helpful suggestions.

Super helpful.

I smiled at the super helpful suggestions and nodded a little blankly and then went back to standing and staring.

And thinking.

About super important things.

Like trying to remember where I put the package of cotton balls and wondering if we had lavender hand soap here and the house and then trying to remember if my mother even liked lavender and how long does lavender soap smell stay on your hands.

And wondering if I should just add lemon verbena instead.

See what I mean.

Extra super important.

A close-up of a towel ring attached to a white beadboard wall. A towel with a floral pattern in shades of blue and green, along with a couple of thin purple stripes, is hanging from the silver circular ring.

A white ceramic container filled with cotton swabs is placed on a beige countertop. The container has a textured pattern with small embossed dots and diagonal lines. The background features a white, vertically paneled wall.

And that’s how the re-decorating process went.

Me staring and thinking.  Him waiting patiently and suggesting and smiling encouragingly at me with a face that upon closer inspection might have suggested he would rather be running down by the canal.

Finally, into the awkward silence, he said, “You should really feature me on the blog with my suggestions.  You know.  Kind of like a husband’s perspective on how to decorate.  I think people would like that.”

Husbands and decorating?

That snapped me out of my reverie.

A close-up of two neatly folded towels resting on a metal towel rack. The towels are light blue with a floral pattern in white and green, and have a dark blue trim along the edges. The background is a plain, light-colored wall.

A close-up image showing a wooden mat with a woven pattern placed on a hexagonal white tiled floor. The mat has a reddish-brown color, and its rectangular wooden pieces are arranged in an interlocking design, creating a contrasting texture against the tiles.

A bright, white bathroom with a vanity and sink on the left, a mounted mirror above it, and a toilet on the right. There are neatly folded towels on a rack above the toilet, and a framed picture on the wall. The floor has hexagonal tiles.

“Really?” I said.  “Husband design suggestions.  That’s a thought.  It might be fun.”

Then I paused (and then asked the question you are all totally thinking), “Tell me a design suggestion you might make for the blog?”

He looked around the bathroom.

He looked it up and looked it down.  I could see the wheels turning and then he paused took a deep breath and doled out his decorating advice with all the seriousness of the signers of the Constitution.

“Blue,” he said.

I waited patiently for him to continue. This was off to a good start.

“Blue?” I said.

“Blue,” he said proudly and then he turned and left the room.

And that my friends? That was the beginning, middle and exciting conclusion of this episode of husband design suggestions.

A couple stands on a boat with an American flag in the background. They are both smiling, wearing sunglasses, and casual clothing. The woman is in a navy blue sweater and white shoes, and the man is in a blue jacket, navy shorts, and a baseball cap. The sky is partly cloudy.

PS  Here’s a picture of us from yesterday.

Me: thinking up projects.

Him: thinking about blue.
