In the redesign of a colonial house in Bellport, New York, by French designer C. S. Valentin, the interiors have a distinct look balancing the colonial architecture with midcentury furniture, modern textiles, and nervy color. Case in point? The upstairs bedroom. Here we take a closer look at Valentin’s formula.

Above: A full view of the bedroom shows Valentin’s unexpected color palette: shades of yellow, dark gray, pale purple, and a spot of red. Styling by Alexa Hotz; photograph by Jonathan Hokklo for Remodelista.

Paint

Above: Used on the radiators, Farrow & Ball’s Railings is a favorite dark gray.

Above: The bedroom floors were already painted pale yellow when the owners moved in. For something similar, Farrow & Ball’s Pale Hound in Modern Eggshell is the finish Farrow & Ball recommends for painting wood floors.

Lighting

Above: Valentin sourced the pair of vintage lamps at Holler & Squall in Brooklyn and had them rewired. You can find something similar online at Chairish (shown is s Midcentury Italian Swing Arm Floor Lamp we spotted) or on 1st Dibs. For a modern lookalike, consider the Exposior Unlacquered Brass Task Floor Lamp by Paul McCobb, $799 from CB2.

Above: West Elm’s black ceramic Large Totem Table Lamp (shown) is no longer available, but the Danelea Resin Table Lamp is a good lookalike; $105 from AllModern.

Furniture
