Looking for a creative way to use paper tags? This paper flower project is made from simple paper gift tags. See the DIY instructions below.

A set of blank white paper tags with scalloped edges and holes for stringing. They are stacked in groups. Beside them is a bundle of brown twine, tied with a silver wire. One tag is shown threaded with the twine.

If you had a million years.

And a million guesses.

You will NEVER BELIEVE what I made from these.

What are you thinking? What are you guessing?

What could a person make from tags like these?

You might guess a calendar. Nope.

You might guess a garland. Nope.

You might guess a wreath tag. Nope.

I’ll give you a hint.

I painted them.

Well…actually, I painted them and then I dipped them in water and then I let them dry and stacked them up….

….and made this.

A vibrant pink paper flower with green leaves adorns a white vase. In the background, blue and white decorative bowls are filled with matching patterned ornaments. A gold and white lamp adds elegance to the arrangement on a light wooden table.

A flower.

YESSSSSSSS.

Can you believe it?

When my husband walked upstairs and I was sitting in the craft room making this and he saw the flower for the first time his eyes widened and he said, “WOW.”

He left me painting a bunch of tags and when he walked back in I was holding this.

A handcrafted flower made from layered, scalloped-edge pink paper sits on a table. The flower has a string attached and is near a blue and white patterned dish with various spheres inside. Green leaves are visible behind the flower.

Here’s an overhead view of the flower so you can see the tags better.

Did you guess?

It’s a flower completely made up of tags.

You know.

Those simple white gift tags that you use to tie on presents. I saw a flower like this in a book and thought to myself—you can make that KariAnne.

So I kind of figured it out.

Want to know how I made it?

Oh, good. I have a step-by-step.

DIY Spring Paper Flower Project

supplies:

small paper tags

large paper tags

styrofoam ball

paint

white floral wire

A woman stands smiling next to a table covered with sliced strawberries laid out on paper towels. She is wearing a cream apron over a white shirt and jeans. The room has light-colored walls, a rug, and framed floral artwork.

Three bottles of red acrylic paint on a white surface, surrounded by red paint smudges. One bottle is labeled "Americana Razzle Berry," another has a partially visible logo. A rectangular pink card lies nearby.

A paintbrush in a transparent cup filled with pink-tinted water on a white surface. Pink paint swatches and splashes are scattered around the cup.

A plastic cup filled with pink liquid and a stirring stick on a surface splattered with various shades of pink. Rectangular pink shapes are scattered around the background.

Step 1: paint the tags

This was kind of a learning process.

(total aside: I think it makes it so much easier to figure out if you are wearing a super cute craft apron like this. )

I started with a super watered-down mixture of paint and water. I took a picture of how much paint I used to water. First, I painted the mixture on the tags, but I thought it looked too painty and I was going for more of a watercolor look.

So I just soaked the tags in the water for about 2 minutes instead.

Then I pulled them out and let them dry on parchment paper.

If there were spots on the tags, I used a dry brush to spread the paint around on the tag.

A small white Styrofoam sphere is partially covered with a pink, textured paper that has a hole in it. The sphere rests on a lined surface, surrounded by additional pieces of pink paper.

A small, pink, perforated paper cube sitting on lined notebook paper, surrounded by a stack of similar pink paper shapes.

Step 2: start creating the flower center

I cut down the edges of the smaller tags to start forming the flower center.

I took a small styrofoam ball and stuck a piece of white floral wire into the center of it. The tags are bendable because they’ve been painted, so I started with one tag and hot glued it in place and then wrapped another one around the edge of that tag and hot glued that one in place.

It looks a little awkward at first.

Do not give up.

This is the hardest part.

After this step, you’ll start to see the flower.

A pink rose made from carefully folded paper is resting on lined paper. In the background, there are additional layers of similar pink paper, suggesting a crafting project or decorative art.

Step 3: keep wrapping the tags

I kept wrapping the tags around the center of the flower and hot gluing them in place.

Each layer of tags was slightly larger than the tags before it.

After I glued the tags in place and then bent the edges back of the flower to make the petals.

Stacked pink paper tags with scalloped edges on a white surface. Some tags show deeper pink hues, and there are subtle marks and shading visible on them. The background is softly blurred.

Step 4: add the larger petals

For the next step, I started to add the larger tags.

The challenge at this step is that the flower has a circle base, so I wanted to bring the flower to the point at the end.

So when I started adding the larger tags, I cut the end of the tags to a point (you can see it in the photo).

And then I started hot gluing the larger tags in place.

I kept gluing the tags in place until I had the size of flower that I wanted.

Step 5: add twine

Wrap the twine around the ends of the tags.

I threaded it through and let the ends hang off the tags.

I added the twine to the outer tags.

Step 6: wrap the ends and add leaves

Once you have the flower the size you want, wrap the stem with floral wire.

Start at the top and wrap the flower until the stem and the top of the flower (the end with all the tags) is completely wrapped.

You can also wrap leaves into the stem as well.

And that’s it.
