How to gracefully incorporate a new kitchen in a vintage A-frame? The owners of this 1970s kit house in Springs, New York\u2014the once affordable Hamptons hamlet that Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner called home\u2014opted for a European-style kitchen systems approach. The couple, who are both in television production and come from the UK and Europe, had worked with Henrybuilt on their Manhattan kitchen and appreciated the company\u2019s devotion to impeccable craftsmanship and clean-lined functionality.<\/p>\n

For their A-frame, they chose the brand\u2019s simpler, more affordable system, Space Theory. \u201cThe kitchen was designed to feel true to the house,\u201d says Lisa Day of Space Theory. \u201cThe materials hearken to those from the age of the architecture: laminate, aluminum, and touches of wood that dialogue with the structure.\u201d The results manage to look tailored and timelessly modern\u2014and at home. Above: The owners wanted to introduce a modern kitchen with the least amount of intervention. \u201cThey focused on the areas and items they touch and feel every day,\u201d says Day. The cabinets are finished with Storm Grey laminate and anodized aluminum knobs, both from Space Theory and only sold as part of a complete design. The floor is finished with outsized porcelain tiles.

Above: The living area is open plan and has its original knotty pine paneling. The mix of built-ins and freestanding elements, such as the Smeg fridge, was intentional\u2014\u201declectic like the rest of the house,\u201d says Day.

Above: Space Theory\u2019s Opencase system of wall panels, here in anodized aluminum, were custom fit and serve as a backsplash kitted out with storage. The range is a 24-inch, four-burner Bertazzoni and the hood is by Futuro Futuro.,

Above: Opencase accessories, including hanging rods and oak shelves, are designed to mount to the panels via a grid of stainless steel rods and can easily be moved in and out or shifted around.
